Artist History
Pirkinweed was formed in 1998 by Graham Pollock and Richard Liang out of a mutual respect for the bass harmonica. Quickly realizing that neither owned nor played the bass harmonica, and that the bass harmonica may not exist, the pair hedged their bets and picked up guitars. Jesse Cooper was unspokenly inducted into the band after he told Graham, "There's no way in hell you're playing my drums in my house." Grade 11 brought about great change within the band, and Richard quit. Richard rejoined the band after two days, and played a prominent role in the band's first public performance, in front of 700 enthralled students. Existing solely for the purpose of having a posse to go to the 7-Eleven with, the band continued with numerous notable local musicians gracing their ranks, including Nick "I Have No Vowels In My Last Name" Grylls and one Matt Rexin of Funkagroovich and Bamboo Central fame. This infamous "blue" period in the band's existence came to an end when, frustrated by the lack of nacho cheese, Richard quit the band. Regrouping after two hours, the duo of Liang and Pollock continued to hone their songwriting skills, culminating in a 2nd-place finish in a poetry contest with a poem about rubber. This notoriety led to the band being inundated with over 100 applicants for the vacant bass player position. Shortlisting this to 50 notables, Eric Severinson was selected for his radiant smile and pleasant phone voice. Graham was so elated with the selection that Richard left the band. To date, Richard has left the band 17 times. Richard rejoined after going to the washroom, and the group began to rehearse. Realizing they needed a singer, the band advertised an essay contest with the topic "Fight the Power." Jen Verrall finished 3rd, and subsequently joined the band as vocalist. Richard quit. Richard is expected to rejoin at 4:30, after his computer science class. On a whim, the band became The Asbestos Concern on the evening of November 10, 2002 with little fanfare. Somewhere in Scotland, Jim Dinning was heard to say, "Fuck. So much for my slogan." |
