Artist History
Ren Rutledge started trying to play musical instruments at the age of six. His first instrument was a plastic harmonica that his father gave him when he was sick with the mumps. At the age of eight Ren was playing a bass fiddle in church. He had to stand in a chair in order to play it
At the age of nine Ren started playing electric bass in Church and caught the attention of several recording artists. At age ten Ren was traveling to various recording studios playing the bass on many records that became very popular. During that time Ren had travelled to Memphis to play the
Bass along with the Singing Rambos for the Carl Denny Family. After riding all those miles, Ren and the group of musicians that had brought him had to wait while a young man..."just kept on recording..." "We waited and waited, and it seemed he would never get out of our way." He was some unknown guy by the
name of Elvis Presley. At age twelve Ren was leader of a blues band that he had assembled in the community. His guitar players were first cousins to Elvis. The band group became very busy and always had places to perform. The only problem was this. Ren's father was pastor of a Pentecostal Church, and never was
told that his son was a blues band leader. This all came to an end when The Rev. Marvin Rutledge, Ren's father, found his son and a group of strangers practicing the St. Louis Blues in the Church. Some of the musicians were dancing to the music when Ren's father came in through the window. That was the end of Ren's Blues Band. Soon
after the break up of the band, Dollarway School, where Ren attended, started a school band. Ren joined and got so excited that he learned to play every instrument in the band, and learned to write music for the band. Ren went to college at Arkansas State University on a Scholarship provided because of his musical talent. During his fresheman year
he wrote a march for the university band. Donald Minx, the band director, was so moved by the music, he had the band to play it several times and brought all the music staff in to witness a freshman doing what none of the seniors had learned to do. They recorded the march, and Ren took the recording home and listened to it over and over all night. He was so
proud of himself, because he had worked so hard to learn to write music for the college band. When Ren came home from class the next day, he went to the bed room and immediatly turned the tape recorder on to listen to his march. All he could find on the tape was his little sister's voice singing "Deep and Wide..There's a fountain flowing deep and wide..." Ren
became very angry, because his sister had erased all his hard work and recorded recognition. He complained to his father who responded by saying..."Son, There is a fountain flowing deep and wide..." Ren became a High School band director. At age twenty four he found himself managing three music stores, directing a high school band, teaching guitar lessons at night,
and working as a radio announcer on week ends. During this time Ren became very serious about God and wrote dozens of Christian songs, many of which are recorded and performed by dozens of singers and musicians around the world. After dedicating his life to God, Ren felt his call into the ministry, gave notice to the school, the music company, and the radio stations.
and started preaching and singing full time. Ren has been music director, evangelist, and pastor in many places during the years, but finally arrived in Norwich Connecticut about fifteen years ago where he felt that God told him to stop and start a ministry. Since that time Ren Rutledge has been dedicating his efforts to building a BIBLE TEACHING MUSIC MINISTRY and invite
interested Christian musicians and singers to use their skills for Jesus Christ. Ren has just returned from Tatarstan, Russia where he and a group of friends that went with him, handed out five thousand Russian Bibles and taught thousands of new Christians the wonderful good news of God's word. While in Russia Ren met a very talented musical group and is presently working with these
young Christian Russian singers to produce a CD and a tape for Russian speaking Christians around the world to enjoy. That's the introduction. The rest of the story is in the music. |
