Artist History
Ever since Jeff To was born in Scarborough, Ontario, music has been part of his life.
He studied piano for 5 years before he took up bass guitar as his primary instrument.
In highschool, he co-founded a rock-funk band called "Second Coming" where his primary
influences - such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rocco Prestia, Jaco Pastorius, Perry
Farrel, Living Color, The Clash, Yes, Kool and the Gang, James Brown - aided him in his
musical development. Second Coming was later one of 10 bands to be selected in the
Toronto Battle of the Bands.
Meanwhile, Jeff continued to participate year after year in local jazz ensembles,
string ensembles, and pit bands for play productions which included Guys and Dolls and
West Side Story. During his studies at the University of Toronto, equipped with an
8-track analog recorder, Jeff began experimenting with studio recording in his
basement. While he was writing and performing his songs as a solo artist, he continued
to collaborate with other Toronto musicians and performed at local bars and school
events.
Upon graduation, Jeff moved to Chicago where he continued with his solo compositions.
He also collaborated with local Chicago musicians in producing more aggressive and
progressive music than his own solo work. These Chicago artists included Criminal
Record (Eric Jones, Tom Papus, Thor) and Big Bang Music Theory (Sam Gjokai, Tom 'porn
star' Skordalos). After 2 years, Jeff moved to NYC and co-founded Scrotum.
Additionally, as a studio bassist, he performed with local NY artists including Amora,
300 lbs Thick (formerly DTA), and Jade.
The music featured here is Jeff's solo work, which differs greatly from his live
collaborative work. His solo work tends to be very introspective and melodic, whereas
his bass work in bands spans all musical genres and all aggressive sounds including hip
hop, alternative rock, jazz, reggae, and various fusions of the aforementioned.
Jeff is currently living in NYC and is pursuing his Masters degree at UPENN. |
