Press Reviews
**AmbiEntrance - David J. Opdyke - What do you get when you toss a multi-genre guitarist and the drummer from Queensryche into America's deepest gorge? An atmospherically-charged, progressively-rocking travelogue from Hells Canyon... Scott Rockenfield's rock-steady rhythmications and Paul Speer's guitars boldly blaze 11 twisting trails between precipice walls and across desert flatlands as stingingly fluid timekeeping and fiery fretboard gymnastics are underscored by swelling synth choruses._______**Mwe3.com -- After years of recording a number of brilliant instrumental albums for Seattle-based Miramar Recordings, guitarist/keyboardist Paul Speer reunites with drummer Scott Rockenfield for their latest venture into the realm of ambient instrumental rock. The pair scored high points among fans of the genre with their fabulous ‘98 soundtrack for the long form video, TeleVoid, and Hell’s Canyon continues their stature as trendsetting instrumental rockers. Much more than a guitar shred-fest, Hell’s Canyon is alive with sonic scenery. A daredevil journey that takes your imagination on a musical rollercoaster, Hell’s Canyon is a soundtrack for the never-ending movie in your mind. Speer’s spatial electric guitar work has never sounded better and Rockenfield’s stadium-size drumming skills drives the duo to new heights. A high-tech recording made possible with the Digidesign Pro Tools system, Hell’s Canyon takes listeners to new altitudes._______**Stephanie Sollow - Progressive World - The album begins with a thunderstorm as we enter the gorge, and then we're zipping our way along, the walls towering above us. Each track stands out and if the liner notes are any indication, a lot of thought went into these compositions as they are truly evocative of the scenery and mood they are trying to create. That alone makes this a successful album. Add in great performances and stellar production and you have album sure to top many top ten lists._______**The Global Muse.com - Michael Allison -- It's not often to hear instrumental music that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of the everyday guitar laced shredding and into a realm of uncharted beauty and imagery. Hells Canyon is one of those instrumental albums that does just that. The music transpires within and inspires throughout the dark realms of your mind and into the deepest valleys of your imagination. Excellent guitar and evolutionary progressive rock compositions are just the beginning. This is definitely a masterpiece that utilizes electronica style rhythms with the raw power of electric guitars and acoustic drums. Hells Canyon has to be the best instrumental album of the year, if not the entire decade._______**Patrick McDonald - www.progradio.net/progged2 -- Paul Speer is probably best known for his work with David Lanz on the Narada label, producing popular new-age works such as "Natural States," and "Desert Vision." Scott Rockenfield is, well, Scott Rockenfield (Queensrÿche's drummer/keyboardist). This album is a solid work of ambient rock that goes just about anywhere, like a musical sport-utility vehicle. Each track suggests a different aspect of this region of the desert west, or perhaps an event that took place there. In the liner notes, short paragraphs accompany the song titles, helping to set the tone and depict R&S's inspiration for each track. Metal-heads and new-agers alike will find something here, I have no doubt. Both artists are excellent at what they do, and together they have found a way for a listener to "feel" a place. |
