Artist History
I knew I wanted to play the guitar in early high school. I began figuring out popular songs on my dad's dulcimer. I even rigged the dulcimer with a tremolo by jamming a spoon underneath the bridge. Finally, one summer I had saved up enough money the summer after my sophomore year to buy my first guitar. I played and practiced hours upon hours emulating the great rock guitarists like Eddie Van Halen and Ynqwie Malmsteen. In college, I attended a concert of violinist Robert McDuffie performing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. From the opening theme I knew that I wanted to play the violin as well. I immersed myself in the violin repetoire and began playing in local orchestras. I continued playing guitar as well and writing music for my studio band FT. While studying music for a semester in London, I got the idea to transcribe violin works for the guitar and I began transcribing the extraordinarily difficult D Major concerto by Tchaikovsky. Eventually, realizing that I started playing too late to ever be as good as I wanted on the violin, I gave it up and pursued the guitar and songwriting full time. Now, I maintain a balance between writing original songs for FT, solo works, and transcriptions for the guitar. |
