Press Reviews
"RIEGEL. The opening event at the new Riegel Cultural Forum featured the coffee house music of Vienna and Berlin. This music, with its light, joyful melodies, helped define the pulse of life in these cities in the 20th century. Typical of the spirit of the '20s and '30s in central Europe, the songs strike us today as airy, one might almost say gay. Something of the "lightness of being" that is an important characteristic of this cultural mix at the junction of the middle-European and Slavic worlds comes out in the performance of the László Quartett. In rigorous, clear lines and a fiery heartbeat, the quartet tells stories of life with its musical language. But the music is not just light and joyful: it is also dramatic, even evocative of the sorrows and joys of love. The ensemble is always well versed and capable in its play, never unconcentrated. It was unmistakable in the concert hall that the László Quartett - László Fogarassy (1st violin), Alexander Brutsch (2nd violin), Bernd Schöpflin (double bass) and Zsolt Nèmeth (piano) - are pros, at one with the body and soul of the music." -Markus Zimmermann-Dürkop |
