Artist description
British violinist Katherine Sweeney studied at The Royal Academy of Music with David Martin and Emanuel Hurwitz. At the RAM she held a Charles Black Fellowship and gained her recital diploma in 1978. Katherine continued her studies with Helen Dowling and performed in master classes with Felix Andreievsky, Max Rostal and Igor Ozim. She was Liverpool's 'Student of The Year' in 1976, succeeding Sir Simon Rattle who had won the award the previous year. She has subsequently had a busy and successful career as a solo performer and recording artist, performing throughout the UK and featuring on many albums and CDs. In 1978 she was the featured soloist in the Sir John Barbirolli Conducting Competition, and was the concert master and soloist in the first British performance of Pfizner's opera 'Palestrina'. Her beautiful tone and musical versatility are much admired by British audiences and critics. |

Press Reviews
"A well chosen selection of 20th Century repertoire is played admirably by this young artist. The uncompromising difficulties of Prokofiev's Solo Sonata are well met as is the the complex double stopping of the Szymanowski." - Monthly Guide to Recorded Music; "Even the most stolid ECM fan will appreciate the affecting but unsentimental playing of Katherine Sweeney." - Jazz Journal; "Clearly gifted" - Crescendo; "Katherine Sweeney's sweet and lyrical violin." - Jazz Journal; "Her tone is strong but not strenuous, and she colours her playing very subtly. Best of all is the flexible phrasing, a quality which ensures that this delicately poised music flowers naturally." - Music and Musicians; "Sweeney is a skilful violinist." - Music Week. |
