Debussy's Sonata in G for Violin and Piano - completed in March 1917 - was to be his last work before his death in 1918. Though Debussy is said to have thought little of this Sonata, it has nevertheless established itself as one of the finest works in the violin and piano repertoire. Within the clear and concise framework, far removed from his earlier impressionist works, of the sonata form first movement, the Harlequinesque second, and the third movement Rondo, Debussy presents his themes in a wide variety of cunning juxtapositions. |

Prokofiev's Solo Sonata was, despite its title, originally intended for use by students and to be performed in classes of up to twenty violinists playing in unison. This sonata exhibits all the hallmarks of Prokofiev's individual style, written in clear classical form, with Prokofiev's unique harmonic flavour. |

A.A.Owen's On Muted Strings was written in memory of the Latvian composer Albert Jerums, the composer's uncle. The five movements, which take the form of an emotional arc, are based on just five germinal motifs. In the course of the work these are given a wide variety of development, juxtaposition and transformation, thus binding the first four contrasting movements. The finale proves to be an effective resolution of the beginning of the opening movement. |
