Artist History
Mr. Soluri’s achievements as a composer have occurred rapidly over a relatively short period of time. While he had studied and performed several different styles of music since the age of four, Mr. Soluri was only introduced to composing at the age of eighteen while attending Bennington College. Since then, Mr. Soluri has received several grants and awards as well as world premiers and commissions by numerous ensembles and orchestras including Manhattan Virtuosi, for which he served as Composer-in-Residence from 1998 - 2000, chairman of the Composers Council and a member of the Board of Directors in 1999. Mr. Soluri’s first season as Composer-in-Residence culminated in the premiere of his Fantasia for String Trio & Orchestra for which he received a 1998 Margaret Fairbank Jory Copy Assistance Grant from the American Music Center.Mr. Soluri’s first ballet, Ngoni, was performed to critical and popular acclaim at the NuMillenniuMusicaDance AIDS Benefit, produced by Mr. Soluri and choreographed by the renowned New York choreographer, Francis Patrelle. The New York Times praised the "compressed sophistication" of the score. Following the success of this collaboration, Mr. Patrelle commissioned Mr. Soluri to write a ballet based on the painting by John Singer Sargent, Madame X. Premiered in New York in April of 1999, Madame X also received both public success and critical recognition. The New York Times commented, "The choreographic drama was enhanced by Patrick Soluri’s restless score..."In 1999, Mr. Soluri’s undertook his first opera, Inferno, which was based on Dante’s masterpiece. It was premiered in a fully staged production in New York under the baton of Glen Barton Cortese and the NuMillennium Orchestra. Following this, Mr. Soluri was commissioned by the Manhattan School of Music Opera Studio to write the finale for their fall 1999 opera scenes program, "A Time Capsule", celebrating time and the new millennium with conductor Gary Wedow of New York City Opera. Additionally, Mr. Soluri’s Fantasia Trio was selected by the new music ensemble eXindigo! for performances within California followed by touring throughout Europe and Scandinavia.Mr. Soluri began his formal training in composition at Bennington College in Vermont under the tutelage of Tobias Picker and Allen Shawn. While attending Bennington, he also studied improvisation and world percussion with Bill Dixon and Milford Graves as well as electronic music with Joel Chadabe. Mr. Soluri received a BM from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City where he was a scholarship recipient studying with Aaron Jay Kernis (winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize) and Nils Vigeland. |
