The finale to the Ballet "Madame X" based on the famous painting from 1884 by John Singer Sargent. The setting of Madame X is turn of the century Paris. The themes of the ballet ponder the nature of conformity within society, social mores, and the changing view of what is considered acceptable public behavior. The main character is based on the subject of the John Singer Sargent painting Madame X. This woman, Madame Gautreau (and her sensually painted image) caused a scandal in social circles, because she was depicted in a way that audiences had never encountered. They branded her a courtesan, and though she was conducting an extramarital affair at the time, she was not any more amoral than any of her criticizers. It was the merely sexual overtones of the painted image that touched a nerve in society, and caused it to rebel. In historical retrospect, this rebellion can be viewed as hypocrisy. Commissioned by Dances...Patrelle, this work recieved four performances in April of 1999. Photos of the production can be viewed at www.soluri.com |
