Artist description
Catonium consists of two individuals who are determined to explore the electronical jungle, swooping through the various styles encountered so far, in ways too enigmatic for most people to comprehend. The band combines electronic noises, beats and drones with relatively small amounts of acoustic instruments, combining it all with harsh & soothing vocals in many different ways. Neoclassical influences can be heard at times, coupled with the relentless aura of psychotic bliss that is Catonium's core. Definetely something out of the ordinary, so check it out! |

Press Reviews
Catonium describes themselves as producing music where all kinds of styles of music are blended into a ball of pure..... creativity! Finding their site interesting, I checked out a few of their other tracks, and found that they have a lot of interesting works on their site. They are heavy into experimentation and genre blending, and almost no two tracks sound alike. 'Marching into Metropolis', reminded me of soundtracks used for big cities in sci-fi films. Although it seems like that was one of their more conservative works, the track itself seemed more polished and finalized.
The structure for this work is smart, and very fitting to the title. The track starts off as an ambient-like introduction, making the listener wonder where they are. Then a slow industrial-like percussion section kicks in, steadying the beat. String chords float over all of this, providing the harmony for the song. Then around 3 minutes into the song the drum groove kicks in. Guess where we're marching into?
The texture for this track is thick. Very thick. Things build up, but rarely drops out, resulting in a complicated layer of sounds especially toward the second half of the track. This is okay sometimes, but it's a little overwhelming for me if it just stays that way throughout the whole song. It depends on your taste, but for variety sake it's nice to have pure tones once in a while, in my opinion.
This song is void of any obvious melody, so it may have trouble breaking from its soundtrack-like sound. There are a lot of sound effects thrown in for added complexity, but musically it is a very minimal work. Past the 3 minute mark there's not much going on other than a few repetitions, so I can already almost imagine one being there. Unfortunately at this point nothing fills the yearning for something big after all that marching and tension building.
This kind of went through my mind listening to this:
I imagine marching through the rural areas, the suburbs, the streets, the inner city, oh look a bird! Flying cars!...and what's awaiting at the center of town?? Oops we missed the center of town and now were outside again ok bye. (The sudden ending contributes to this.)
I just wanted to see something.. maybe a huge skyscraper (predictable climax) or a futuristic talking head of Bill Gates (surprise climax) or anything at all. If it builds up that much naturally the audience will want something big to compensate being dragged around so much. Otherwise.. what a gyp! But on the bright side this work is a lot better than songs that don't get anywhere at all throughout it's entire duration.
Over and all this work is actually not too bad, there's probably enough variation for more people, and the production quality is good. But I think it can be something so much more..
