    Artist History
Max Collie is one of the great internationally famous New Orleans style jazz musicians. Born in Melbourne, Australia, February 1931, where he learnt to play trombone in the Malvern Municipal Brass Band, and then soon went on to lead the Max Collie's Jazz Bandits and Jazz Kings. He came to England in 1962 with the Melbourne New Orleans Jazz Band whilst on its European tour and a year later joined the London City Stompers and soon became its leader. The Max Collie Rhythm Aces were formed in 1966 and it became one of the best bands in Britain. There were tours in Europe and the USA with the Rhythm Aces and in 1975 they sustained an 85 day tour covering 40,000 miles and won the World Championship of Jazz in Indianapolis competing against the cream of New Orleans, Dixieland and Traditional jazz bands in America and Canada in the making. In 1984 Max created a theatre show "New Orleans Mardi Gras" which show-cased jazz artists Ken Colyer, Cy Laurie and others, including jazz singers Marilyn Middleton Pollock, Christine Tyrrell and Pauline Pearce in over 100 performances. I have followed Max from his early beginnings in London, through his long residency in the Trafalgar pub at 200 Kings Road, Chelsea, which produced a Double LP Album entitled, "Battle of Trafalgar" so, I'm sure, you'll enjoy those MP3.com tracks, taken from his "Live In Stuttgart" CD which he, leading on trombone his Rhythm Aces, played at the Preston Cross Hotel, Bookham, Surrey, concert on Sunday 16 April 2000 in his own, but now milder, hardswinging style. KJR 18 April, 2000.
