Five emcees (Haft, Hypnotic, The Iron Sheik, Mr. Milin, and Sohrab), a turntablist (DJ Hecktik), and a producer extraordinaire (Markis Precise), all with a love for what hip hop is supposed to be, and the ability to make it reality is the foundation of The Basement.
The Basement has blessed many stages throughout California, opening up for some of the biggest names in hip hop including: Mos Def, Talib Kweli (2X), Krs-one, Common, Black Thought and ?love of The Roots, Planet Asia (2X), Styles of Beyond, Mood, Zion I, Encore, Medusa, Burning Star, Taboo of Black Eyed Peas, The Whoridas, Rise N Shine, The Faculty, Turbin, Click Tha Supa Latin, Dj Fyngaz, and 4th Ave. Jones. The Basement has also performed at countless benefit shows, festivals, and other events with many bands from a variety of musical genres including: hip-hop, rap, punk rock, heavy metal, r&b, jazz, Latin, and easy listening.
Their first lp, "The Lost Book". was released in the summer of 1999, and has done exceptionally well on the underground market. Other releases include two separate Creative Influence compilations (featuring many talents from around central and northern California) and a splinter group project called "Jihad: The Sword of the Basement". Currently The Basement is finished recording the sophomore album entitled "Stargazing: Just Another Late Night," and the work is in the production stage and is set to be released in the winter of 2001.
In the realm of The Basement, ignorance cannot reside as they attack many political, social, and conscious issues through the use of an art that they refer to as "Odd Talk." "The Lost Book" covered mankind’s love for money, hip hop’s ignorance, universal law and balance, stargazing, and many other topics.
In addition to the new website thebasement559.com, The Basement has also been featured on websites such as: mp3.com, garageband.com, audiogalaxy.com, centralcali.com, ugsmag.com, vitaminc.com, and iuma.com. On garageband.com, The Basement’s underground classic "natural," hovered around the top ten for three months becoming a signature track for the site, and finally in August it hit #1 and made its way into the sites final cut.
The Basement has also had write ups in each of the following: twice in The Fresno Bee, twice in The Collegian, The Davis Aggie, and The Fresno Weekly
