Born in Berkeley, California in 1960 Peter Apfelbaum began playing drums at the age of three, took up piano and saxophone at nine and had his first band at eleven. A product of the Berkeley schoools' pioneering Jazz Project, he began gigging professionally while in his early teens, formed the improvisational quartet Berkeley Arts Company in 1975, and was a member of the award-winning Berkeley High Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Phil Hardyman. In 1977 Apfelbaum formed the 17-piece Hieroglyphics Ensemble as a vehicle for composing and exploring non-traditional forms. Comprised mainly of fellow B.H.S. classmates, the Ensemble originally included pianist Benny Green and saxophonist Craig Handy and later featured saxophonist Joshua Redman.
At the age of 19, Apfelbaum moved to New York City, where he worked with Karl Berger, Carla Bley and the late Eddie Jefferson. He returned to the Bay Area in 1981 and resumed working with his big band which would eventually attract international attention. In 1988 Apfelbaum began an association with trumpeter Don Cherry, who appeared frequently with the Hieroglyphics Ensemble and featured the group on his album MultiKulti (A&M 1990). Cherry also formed the MultiKulti quartet with Apfelbaum and Hieroglyphics colleagues Bo Feeman (bass) and Josh Jones (drums), which toured extensively in Europe, North America and Japan.
In the early nineties, the Hieroglyhics Ensemble recorded two albums for the Antilles label: Signs of Life and Jodoji Brightness. The band also opened for the Grateful Dead and appearaed at major festivals in the U.S. and abroad. Apfelbaum has also worked with Cecil Taylor, Nana Vasconcelos, Phish, Francisco Aguabella, O.J. Ekemode and the Nigerian All-Stars, and the late Jim Pepper, among others, and is a member of fello Hieroglyph Jai Utall's Pagan Love Orchestra. As a Composer, he has written pieces for the Kronos Quartet, the Bay Area Jazz Composer's Orchestra and the National Swedish Radio Orchestra. In recent years, he has presented his music with smaller groups in addition to the Hieroglypphics Ensemble, most often with the sextet featured on Luminous Charms.
