This is the Sonata in G, Op.31 No.1, Allegro vivace. The work was composed in 1802 and has been called the "Hiccup Sonata" because of the quick delay between the right hand chords and left hand octaves. Although from the middle period of Beethoven's compositions, it is one of his more difficult sonatas. | MP3.com CD: The Competition Performances - buy it!

This is the Sonata in G, Op.31 No.1, Adagio grazioso. This typically slow second movement is a long ABA form with lots of trills and melodic ornamentation. Toward the end, it even includes a brief cadenza -- a free passage with no set beat, left to the performer's interpretive imagination. | MP3.com CD: The Competition Performances - buy it!
