The adungu ensemble of the Alur represents one of the most sophisticated traditional chordophone (string) ensembles found in sub-Saharan Africa. Regular village adungu ensembles of the Alur range from a minimum of 7 or 9 bow harps of different sizes to as many as 25. A typical ensemble must combine four different types of bow harps differentiated first by their size and second by the musical role each one performs in the ensemble. The four include the kadungu (smallest playing the melody) the adungu (medium that maintains the rhythm(the wadungu (junior bass that unifies the ensemble) and the lidungu (double bass that provides the foundation through the piece). Adungu ensembles are generally played to provide traditional entertainment as well as dance, and worshipping music.

In the musical tradition of Buganda, the madinda (xylophone) may be played both as a solo or as part of a bigger ensemble. In the case of the latter, two styles referred to as madinda and kadinda may be used in the rendition. When played as a solo, a style referred to as 'ssekinnoomu' is used. Tonight, Sumita Pennathur demonstrates this ssekinnoomu style characterized by the establishment of the main theme, followed by multiple multi-directional improvisational variations - all at the direction and control of a single performer.
