Jessica's/Mairi's Wedding/Star of Munster
(trad.). This was the first set of tunes we ever Bansheefied; and in the process, discovered how much fun it is arranging music together.

Captive Maiden (Hunter)/Down the Brae (trad.)
Brenda's other CD (the one she made back when she was part of the duo Briar Rose) has a much more sedate version of her original tune, Captive Maiden. We figured, time to update the story: After years of languishing in her cell, that gal got pretty doggone restless. So, she broke out and ran away (that'd the Down the Brae part). |

Trip to Herve's (McGoldrick)/A minor reel.
It took us about a year to figure out that the jazzy-sounding tune Sonja O'Brien taught us wasn't about wandering into some little French town called Gervais. It's actually a happy Michael McGoldrick tune written about his wacky tour compatriot, Herve. Sorry Michael. But by the time we knew the truth, we'd already conjectured up a whole new story, involving a smoky Breton pub, a mysterious woman and an unclaimed oud. And frankly, we like our story better. |

Ship in Full Sail/The New-Rigged Ship/Farewell to Ireland. Flagons of ale all around! No matter that we usually play this at coffee houses, people tend to raise their cups and sway to the nautical beat. |

Yeah... yeah... Everybody does this song. Ever think that maybe there's a reason why everybody does this song? If you are one of the 18 people on the face of the earth who has not yet ever heard it, get out the hankie. If you're one of the remaining six billion-plus who have, well, get out the hankie. |

Middle of the Island (C. Moore)/Julia Delaney/Christmas Eve (trad.)
Jill starts out this set with a haunting Christy Moore song played as a flute air. Attention Set Police: Yes, we know. The two reels following the air are very much inspired by the immortal Zan McLeod and James Kelly....

(trad.) Most of versions of this old song have Spencer coming to his senses and going home, newly responsible, having worked all that roving nonsense out of his system. But, we'll bet you an Irish pound (or maybe a Euro?) that in Spencer's heart there was still a part of him that yearned to keep roaming. |

War Hent Kerrigouarch (Siberil)/Hieland Sodger/Little Beggar Man
(trad.)
The first tune Mary found on Gerald Trimble's landmark 80's bouzouki album FIRST FLIGHT; Brenda got "Hieland Sodger" from a Tannahill Weavers" album; and everybody knows "Red-Haired Boy", right?

Planxty Drew (O'Carolan)/Catharsis Reel
(Kann). One day, Brenda pulled out her Portland Collection tune book and showed us Catharsis, Amy Kann's great composition that has become Natalie MacMaster's signature tune. It was one of those 'aha!' moments. And a great companion to O'Carolan's lovely tune. |
