Mick took up fretless bass in the late 70's, and was particularly influenced by great players such as Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report) and Ralph Armstrong (Mahavishnu Orchestra). However, his biggest influence was - and still is - fretless bass innovator Percy Jones. Mick's primary musical project during the 90's was his 100% improvisational fusion band The Avant Gardeners, with guitarist Tosh Horie and drummer Chuck Voelter. Their 1996 CD Bob's Your Uncle (OPR-201) was released by Outer Planet Records ( www.theouterplanet.com).
In 1998, a 'cosmic' opportunity arose for Mick to fill-in for his 'mentor' Percy Jones in the legendary British jazz-rock fusion band Brand X, which included founding member/virtuoso guitarist John Goodsall, keyboardist Kris Sjobring and drummer/percussionist John Holmes.
Other members of this prestigious band have been: drummer/percussionists Phil Collins, Bill Bruford, Morris Pert, Kenwood Dennard, Mike Clark, Frank Katz and Pierre Moerlin; bassists Percy Jones and John Giblin; keyboardists Robin Lumley and Peter Robinson; MIDI-vibraphonist Marc Wagnon.
