The Somethings are a truly original band, whose influences and inspirations range from the Beatles to Carole King to Green Day.
The name was inspired by a scene from the Commitments, and they've incorporated some elements of soul into their more recent work.
The band is situated in the Aldershot/Farnham/Fleet area, and all the members currently attend Farnham College (although some will soon be flying the nest and leaving for university).
A short-term project, they originated to have fun and piss around, and in the doing so have produced some truly outstanding music.
Their work, whilst not exactly visionary, is good fun, with some thoughtful lyrics. They've got a good vocal line and their original piano-flute balance produces an edge not usually found in popular music.
Currently their debut single, a collaboration with the Bard of Ely, is their only work online: 'Johnny Rotten's Still My Hero' is the A-side, - produced in cohort with the Bard of Ely, and 'Hole', a thought-provoking ballad is the B-side.
They've got lots more work in progress, including the emotional 'Doll'(a rebellious pmt duet), the beautiful ballads 'Forever' and 'Holding On' (they sound like they belong in the sound track to Dawson's Creek) , the haunting 'Venice Beach'(heavy lyrics which really get to you) and the up-lifting 'Summer Song' (a piss-take on everything by Steps Hear'Say etc etc, inspired by a quote from Black Books).
Keep an eye out for their next album - this band might be short-lived, but what they do produce will be worth listening to, you can be sure of that.

An ethereal but melancholy ballad, minimalist yet impassioned. The balance between flute, piano and vocals makes for a beautiful sound, and the lyrics really stand out. A truly original piece. |
