Jeremiah 18:3,4 Then I went down to the potter's house, and there he was, making something at the wheel. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make. |

"We're blessed to be a blessing, here to make Him known. To lightly hold to this world for it is not our home. We're stewards of the Message of everlasting change. We're blessed to be a blessing, to pour out the love of a King". That last line was influenced by an action David took when he was holed up in the cave of Adullam. He wanted a drink of water from the well at Bethlehem and his three mighty men, at great risk to themselves, went and got some water for him. But, after such heroic effort, he wouldn't drink the water. Instead, he took it and poured it out to the Lord. I used to see this as so ungrateful on his part. I've often wondered why, with so many glaring failures, that God considered him a man after His own Heart. Now, I think I have some understanding of it. We hear all the time that God wants us to be blessed people. I agree, that is true. But I think we're missing why He wants to bless us. I think He wants to bless us so that we can take it to the next level. I think He wants us to fully grasp what He has done for us and be so grateful that we take those blessings and pour them back out to Him. To pour them into the things that He considers important. And, to do it joyously, never daring to hoard them for ourselves. |

To me, these 3 verses are the center of the Bible. Eph 2:8-10 "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." |

This is guitar and vocal version of a song I wrote with a friend of mine, Carol Skipper. Carol writes the devotional "Apron Strings". The song was inspired by her relationship with her dad, Mr. James Oliver. He was "a humble man of prayer". Now, he is with his Lord. Our prayer is that the song honors him, and encourages many other daughters and dads. |

I do try to preach through the songs. I am concerned that Christianity is not having more of an impact on our society. The saying goes that the job of a preacher is to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable". This song belongs in the latter category. As an added note, I have become even more convicted about the state of the Christian Church in America after reading K. P. Yohannan's book "Revolution in World Missions". I highly recommend the book and the organization he heads up "Gospel For Asia". Please visit their website at www.gfa.org and pray about what the Lord would have you do to meaningfully help spread the Gospel. Mike |

One of my heroes of the faith is Brother Don Sellers of Cottonwood, Alabama. When I think of the phrase "What would Jesus do?" I think of him. The second verse of the song is about him. I dedicate this song to him, and I pray that we'll all strive to be: One Holy Light. |

This song was written well before the events of September 11, 2001 and I know that we have made great strides in returning to God since then. But somehow I get the feeling that we're slipping back into our comfortableness (if that's a word). Lets pray that we're not. |

This is a guitar and vocal version of a song I wrote on June 3, 2003. It was inspired as I was thinking about the upcoming wedding (at that time) of our oldest son, Josh, on June 14, 2003 to our pastor's daughter, Melissa. I hope it can be used to encourage others who are entering into God's sacred covenant of holy matrimony. |

I was thinking about the cross and I wondered "What did they do with the cross after they took Jesus off of it?" The most significant event of all time took place on it and what we do with it has eternal consequences. Anyway, there's no way to know but the thought of it led to this song. |

One of the lines in this song says: "But there's not safety in numbers on Judgment Day". I'm afraid way too many people don't grasp that, including many that would call themselves Christians but don't bear any fruit that would indicate a real and growing relationship with God. I have a growing concern for those who might hear "Depart from me, I never knew you". We must make our calling and election sure. |

I love to read Charles Spurgeon's writings and sermons. I got the idea for this song from a line in his Morning and Evening devotional: "Observe the prince of darkness, how persevering in his endeavours, how unabashed in his attempts, how daring in his plans, how thoughtful in his plots, how energetic in all! The devils are united as one man in their infamous rebellion, while we believers in Jesus are divided in our service of God, and scarcely ever work with unanimity. O that from Satan's infernal industry we may learn to go about like good Samaritans, seeking whom we may bless!"

Genesis 22:13 "Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son." I heard Pastor Adrian Rogers preach one time on this passage about Abraham and Isaac. He went on to relate that the same mountain ridge where this took place was the same ridge where many years later God would, in a similar situation, also provide a Way out. The way out wouldn't be provided for His Son though, it would be provided for us. This song is dedicated to Pastor Rogers for his world wide encouragement to so many people, and more importantly, to his Lord, my Lord and hopefully your Lord. |

On September 17,1995 a three year old girl named Stephanie Kuhen was killed when a gang in Los Angeles opened fire on the car she was a passenger in, simply because the driver had taken a wrong turn. I thought about this and it broke my heart. Then I thought that God has to see this kind of thing going on all over the world everyday, and I wondered how He must feel. On September 21, 1995 I wrote this song. It is dedicated to the memory of Stephanie Kuhen, and to her family. |

This song deals with the motivation behind what we do. I want Jesus Christ to be the One glorified, not us. The song was triggered by a line from Faithful to Talkative in "The Pilgrim's Progress". He said "Pray, if you incline to answer me in this, say no more than you know the God above will say Amen to, and also nothing but what your conscience can justify you in; for not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth." My prayer is that God will be able to say amen to our words, our actions, our lives. |

1 Chron. 4:9-10 "And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that Thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that Thine Hand might be with me, and that Thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested." I listen to David Jeremiah's turning point program a lot. One month He was offering a sermon by Dr. Bruce Wilkinson called "A prayer to ignite your life". I ordered the tape and I thought the truths of that sermon could be presented in song form. This was long before Dr. Wilkinson's book "The prayer of Jabez" came out. I know in some circles the book has caught a lot of flack for seeming to promote a magical "genie in a bottle" mentality. I haven't read it but I don't think the sermon was insinuating that. I think more than anything it gets us to focus on the blessings that God gives us everyday, to watch for them and to thank Him for them. Anyway, enough preaching. Here's the song. I hope God does bless you, indeed! |

Our neighbors lost their son to a drug overdose. He was a Christian man but he had gotten into something that he couldn't get away from. About a week after he died the thought came into my mind that he had spent a week in Heaven. I felt like there was a song in it but it never came out until a few months later when I was talking to a friend of mine from work who had just lost his dad, who was also a Christian. The combination of these two events are what God used to inspire this song. I hope it is an encouragement to all who have dear ones in Heaven. |

I wanted to emphasize that there is much more to the Christian life than just getting your ticket punched for Heaven. God has made each one of us as a key part in the body of Christ. Men are everywhere saying or thinking, "Where is the goodwill among men? Where is the peace on earth that was promised?" Yes, but go on with your questions. You have not finished the song. You have left its initial and primary note. I must finish your series of questions, and I must be allowed to ask, "Where is the glory to God in the highest?" We have fixed our eyes upon the third phrase of the angel's song "Goodwill among men"; or upon the second phrase, "peace on earth!" And we have overlooked the first phrase, the phrase which is casual and causative "glory to God in the highest." That is to say, we have begun at the end, and left out the beginning. We have been concerned about fruits, but we have been careless about roots. If you will really think about the matter, it is clear that we have been wanting rivers to arise without any gathering grounds or springs. That is the explanation of our disillusionment. We have laid hold of the chain at the second link, or the third link, and we have strangely overlooked the first. John Henry Jowett |
