“Baroque Rock” , “ Literary Drama Rock” and “Vampire Rock” are just some of the monikers used to describe the unique musical blend of the Lavorel sound. While it may be hard to slap a clear label on this music, there are certainly many influences that help shape it.
On the heavier side we can see shades of Concrete Blonde and The Sisters of Mercy, even some tinges of old Black Sabbath. On the lighter more folkier side , strains of Jethro Tull or Loreena Mckennitt come forth. There is definitely the spirit of The Doors and Jim Morrisons dark bent in some of the writing, but all in all it is it’s own monster. With a voice that could carry an opera, tribal drums, the ocasional cello , piano and a variety of guitar choices, the music becomes a veritable tapestry of sound. The wonderful thing about it all is that it’s strangely authentic. “The real Mccoy” as it were. Lavorel is also highly entertaining to listen to . It’s neither metal nor folk nor classic rock, it’s a blend of genres and sounds which is what this new millenium is about anyway right?
Lavorel is largely the brainchild of singer songwriter Dan Lavorel who was formerly frontman to the little known southwestern band “Masque”, A band the critics labeled as “the group Anne Rice talked about in her books”! Previous to that he gigged with local bands “Witchdoctor” and “The Juju Electric” , the latter of which evolved into “Masque” eventually.
Keeping a love for blending eclectic sounds in a rock setting , you can hear the end result on the new Lavorel CD entitled “Haunted Summer”. The new album shows the strength of Lavorels songwriting talent and vocal abilities as well as a knack for arrangement and blending of styles and instruments together. A very rare approach, especially these days, is how the album has a distinct theme throughout it. The theme of the Gothic Literary novel and of haunted poetry and haunted souls is the unmistakable flavor of “Haunted Summer”. Visit the Lavorel home page at www.lavorelband.com
