Writing a song, making a record . . . living life creatively requires many acts of faith. There was no more fitting way to open this album than with this song about walking into the unknown, knowing that all is well. |

After a rough year in L.A., I began to look for some kind of sanity in the natural world. That's when we wrote this love song to the Beloved. |

In 1993, I had just gone through a major personal transition with relationships, location, and career. While visiting my dear friend, Jamie, I had a vision that woke me up in the middle of the night. In the dream I was reading another friend’s bio which said, "In 1989, Liz built the new church beyond, and the building is made of light." Then I remembered that Liz’s job was caring for people with AIDS. The next morning Jamie and I started writing this song....the centerpiece of my album, "One Heart."

I was writing with Paul Williams for the first time. We tried a few things, but nothing quite clicked. We both looked at each other and Paul said, "Well, it may not be today." Then we started this song about being held by faith.

I walked into the office to write with Gary Harrison and he handed me this incredible lyric. It undoes me every time I hear it or sing it. Reminds me somehow of The Christmas Story and the power of love . . . and how miracles can be found in unlikely places. |

Rick Neigher and I met with Wynonna and wrote this song especially for her. She hasn't recorded it (yet) but without her, this wonderful song wouldn't have been written. |

I bless the world of appearances and look deeper. In my own soul a world of peace is already alive and well. This song is a way of making it real. |

My dear brother and co-writer, John Jarrard, who was blind, used to tell a story about the time he was walking home from his office on Music Row in Nashville - and his cane broke. As he stood there, not knowing what to do, he heard a voice say, "Just keep walking." So he kept going, crossing busy 21st Avenue, even refusing a ride from a friend, until he made it home. John died a few days before Michael and I started writing this song . . . we definitely felt him in the room with us. Thank you, John, for your beautiful, brave and ornery spirit. |
