After just a short time on the New York City music scene, Dub Is A Weapon has already been hailed as, “a sprawling supergroup that combines the spacey atmospherics of dub with the brassy big-band soul of African pop." (New York Magazine). Their unique combination of rootical beats and live dub mixing has quickly gained them a loyal following on their home turf of New York City.
This progressive dub coalition is spearheaded by lead guitarist and mixologist Dave Hahn (Antibalas, Stubborn All-Stars) and Jamaican percussion legend Larry McDonald (Gil Scott-Heron, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh). Other musicians that perform with the group include keyboardist Brian Jackson (Gil Scott-Heron), trombonist Aaron Johnson (Antibalas), and reggae vocalist Ashanti Roy (The Congos).
The main focus of the group has been to not only perform, but also to nurture the burgeoning dub scene in New York City. To this end the group has tirelessly promoted its own series of “dub clashes” with well-known roots reggae selector Ras Kush. These confrontations have routinely produced, “irresistibly irie soundclashes,” (Flavorpill), keeping fans of heavy bass dancing until dawn.
The group recently finished recording its debut album, a primarily instrumental work produced by bandleader Dave Hahn. The album also features collaborations with vocalists Rob Symeon and Ashanti Roy, a heavyweight meeting of Hahn’s rhythms and their Rasta-inspired lyrics.
Having laid a solid foundation, the group plans to move forward in 2003. Fans and critics alike should expect Dub Is A Weapon to venture far and wide from its home base of New York City, as they seek to spread their gospel of roots dub to new audiences across the globe.
