Probably the most popular, if not most "revolutionary" of Chopin's Etudes. I dug this performance out from an old recital tape. |

One of the more popular of the Hungarian Rhapsodies, this charming piece echos the sound of a gypsy band, down to the sound of different instruments. |

This timeless piece is the most famous of the Hungarian Rhapsodies, second only to the infamous #2. It exists in many versions, even for orchestra. Yet, this piece remains at its best on the piano. |

This is one of Liszt's more unusual rhapsodies. A particularly gloomy atmosphere prevails, until the more demonic friska closes the piece. It is particularly provocative in a harmonic sense. |

This piece is considered by many to be among Liszt's most remarkable achievements, foreshadowing impressionism and expressionism years before its time. |

In this piece, paralell fifths and treatment of material is surprisingly modern for the time, and seems more akin to Bartok's music than the romantic era. The piano writing is lean but also rough and akward. Nevertheless, this piece remains one of the most interesting and striking of the late works. This, being the first of two versions, lacks an introduction, and is missing a few bars, yet I like it better than the later one.
Basic, and to the point, this brutal piece was actually inspired by Saint-Seans more wishy-washy dance macabre. |

In the tradition of the tone poem, Franz Liszt created this masterpiece in reference to Dante's Divine Comedy. M. Liszt, being the character he was, was particularly descriptive of the Inferno in this monster of the piano repertoire. |
