Hailing from Coffeyville, Kansas, Bobby Poe and The Poe Kats spawned the music careers of Big Al Downing and Vernon Sandusky. Big Al continues to make great Country records to this day, while Vernon is a renowned guitarist who played in the mid-1960's hit group The Chartbusters. In the 1970's, Vernon was a member of Roy Clark's band, staying with Roy for over 20 years.
Back in the late 1950's, The Poe Kats were often Wanda Jackson's backing band and played on some of her early records, including "Let's Have A Party" -- Big Al played piano, Joe played drums and Vernon handled lead guitar (and that's really saying something because Buck Owens also played guitar on the track). We are pleased to note that "Let's Have A Party" was covered by none other than Paul McCartney on his rousing "roots" DVD and videocassette, "Live At The Cavern Club".
After more than 40 years, Bobby Poe and The Poe Kats still perform the occasional reunion concert. Shown below are recent pictures of Bobby Poe (left) and Vernon Sandusky (right) on stage...
