The Chartbusters burst upon the scene at the height of The British Invasion in the Summer of 1964. They were an American group based in Washington, D.C. and were able to hold their own among the first wave of British Invasion bands. The group's debut single, "She's The One", sold over 750,000 copies, reaching #33 after spending months competing with the more famous artists on Billboard's Singles Chart. "She's The One" ended up becoming a #1 record in many markets around the country.
While The Chartbusters never duplicated their initial chart and sales success, they did have other chart singles. A fixture on the D.C. live music scene until the late 1960's, The Chartbusters evolved out of a band of Rockabilly Hall of Famers called Bobby Poe and The Poe Kats. Both bands featured the renowned guitarist Vernon Sandusky, who later played for over 20 years in Roy Clark's band.
As an interesting side note, Tom Hanks was quoted in People Magazine as saying The Chartbusters were one of the inspirations for his film "That Thing You Do!". We also note that the single "She's The One" was selected for "Nuggets, Volume 4", released by Rhino Records in the 1980's.
