The seed idea for this piece was inspired by some photographs the choreographer found at her grandmother's funeral. Given explores what gets passed down in the family, generational themes that push through our lifetime, and the known and unknown layers we inherit. The work aims to balance abstraction with readablegesture, wandering toward character development without falling into narrative. The only sound source used in this piece is the piano, which was chosen for its ability to simultaneously convey a sense of private and public space, and for its status as a generational symbol. Pianos are often handed down through generations of family. While the music features the raw sound of the piano, the piece depends on computer manipulations to create subtle and dramatic changes in the original performance, as well as multi-track overlays which would otherwise require five or six live pianos to achieve. Throughout the middle sections of Given, the piano maintains several rhythmic and harmonic identities that overlap in broad cycles. The longest of these cycles takes the entire work to complete. |
