A funky bass line and some eerie guitars... Dojo means "place of the way". It was the perfect title for this song because it was concieved in one of my favorite places: the top of a bluff overlooking the Meremac river near St. Louis. I go there when things are bad, and I go there when things are good. That day things were bad. It's kind of a shrine for me. The rhythym and overall mood came to me one day when a train swooped into the valley beneath me and rumbled past - I found myself thinking deep stuff about humans and nature, the sameness, the differences, the interplay with technology. The growling bass line conjures up the rumbling train, and the delay drenched guitar was a sonic way to depict the echoes left in its wake. The energy in the song was probably a result of the six mile hike I did that day! |

A latin flavor to this one... ya. This is a latin flavored piece that goes great with coffee, at least the way I like to drink it. (Starbucks plug!). It's a straightforward mix of 2 nylon string acoustic guitars, electric bass, and drums. I almost wrecked it with some additional tracks, but I thought the better of it and just left it stand on it's own. I was really happy with the bass sound on this one. - mjm |

Haunted, right. This one started with a great sound I was getting on my strat one day, just clean tones that led to the rhythm guitar track you can hear in the background. The melody came from some lyrics I was playing around with and the spooky string bending was of course totally neccessary since it was approaching Halloween. On the particular night that I decided to name this tune, certain members in our house (they will remain nameless) were telling stories about how the house (the one we had just bought a few months earlier!) was haunted. They were completely serious. Really. They were talking 'bout seeing people out of the corner of their eyes and shadows moving across the room and voices and curtains moving and all that kind of stuff! I was the only skeptic, but you could never tell that from listening to this tune. Anyway maybe the place really is haunted. |
