CROSSRHYTHMS ALBUM REVIEW: November / December Issue
"Strongly influenced by soul music prior to his salvation, Jazzis combines a spectrum of soul sounds with a strong Gospel message for "Contemplative Soul". Sophisticated beats, catchy tunes and a soul vibe that is intoxicating, this is smooth. The songs themselves are uncompromisingly Gospel so that even upbeat songs like "Dance To The Rhythm", "Just Won't Groove Me" and "Gonna Make You Dance" don't skimp on the dancey grooves but they also hit you with a straightahead message. Jazzis knows the joy of his salvation and he doesn't want you to miss out either. Then there are the slower numbers where Jazzis takes the opportunity to get all soulful. "What Kind of Love" contemplates the life changing love of Christ and "Walking Home" is a song of security in Christ. My favourite is probably the upbeat optimistic "I'm Gonna Make It". One thing is for sure, with a sweet soul voice, commitment to the message and the musical chops to back it all up, Jazzis is capable of becoming a major player on the gospel scene"

From the name you might expect this to be a Jazz album as I did. But the album is a collection of songs on a contemporary R&B/Soul tip with elements of Jazz. The whole album has been written by London-born Nigerian Olutoyin ‘Jazzis’ Orefuwa and you can often hear the fusion of British and African sounds resulting from his time spent in both countries.
For me, the album required me to listen to it a few times before I started to get a feel for his style and understand where he is coming from. However, there are some tracks that stand out
‘Dance to the Rhythm’ is one, and it is the UK Garage beats that really give it that uniqueness on the album. It starts off placid enough but once the chorus hits it becomes an uplifting club anthem. ‘Jesu’ is another initial strong track that, again, caught my attention as it embraces modern Africa with mid-tempo R&B grooves and a harmonious African choir sung chorus. With the slow jams, ‘In a Little Still Small Voice’ is exquisite having a Craig David like flow and effective use of the good old voice vocoder.
At a time when modern R&B tends to be very technical, the simplistic and classic Soul approach of many of the songs is what sets Jazzis apart. This can be heard on ‘Gonna Make It’, ‘Just Won’t Groove Me’ and ‘Give Him Thanks’ which all have an almost 90’s flavour. Bringing the tempo down, ‘What Kind of Love’ is where a mix of Soul/Worship can be heard which is the same on the title track ‘Contemplative Soul’. ‘Fly Fly Fly’ is more of a down tempo R&B tack with a nicely sung female accompanied chorus and soft acoustic guitar touches throughout.
‘Contemplative Soul’ as an album is a reflection of yesterday R&B alongside more current productions and the project has been produced by Jazzis himself on his independent label EIDO Music. Using his label, he is looking to reach the world with the good news of Jesus by composing and writing Christians songs and making them accessible. Raw sounding he maybe at times but this is a worthy and notable independent debut release.
