"The tango is not a dance but an obsession. For the tanguero, it's as
much a part of life as eating and sleeping. Erotic and passionate,
haunting and melancholy, it involves not only the body but also the
soul."
Tango Five is a multifaceted group playing tango, modern
music, jazz and musical comedy.

The woman that this song tells us about was a real person. Her name was Malena Toledo and she was one of the greatest tango singers of all time, someone whose voice had all the "sadness of the bandoneon". In Argentina people still talk about the voice that could express all the melancholy of the tango. | MP3.com CD: Symphonic Tango Night - buy it!

Asked to whistle a tango, most people would almost certainly offer this melody. Around 1917 an unknown hobby composer by the name of Gerardo Rodriguez sold the rights to a piece of music that he had written for 20 pesos, and lived to regret it! In the cafe "La Giralda" in Montevideo the piece was played as a tango for the first time by Roberto Firpo and his orchestra and from there it set out to conquer the world. Only a few years later, during the Golden Twenties, Paris, New York, Berlin and of course Buenos Aires were all dancing the tango to "La Cumparsita" - that's what the piece had been named in the meantime with a text by the great tango poet Pascual Contursi. "La Cumparsita" remains today the most famous tango in the world. | MP3.com CD: Symphonic Tango Night - buy it!

"El Choclo" by Angel Villoldo is almost as old as the tango itself. It stands in the tradition of the "payadas," those songs that the gauchos of the pampa sang to the guitar while tending the cattle - and in this way, with his guitar and harmonica, Angel Villoldo went from bar to bar, presenting his songs. In Argentina they call him "Papa del Tango," and to the music of his "choclo" it is not hard to imagine vividly how, with a sly expression on his face, he tells the story of the "Ear of Corn," a blond tango dancer. | MP3.com CD: Viva el Tango! - buy it!
