         Mystic Frost

                                                                  the Indian Spirit of Rock

Tree Of Happiness - Painting by Aditya Phadke that graces the cover of Ripchord Moksha

Artist's Mind - digital image by Mike Bonnell graces the cover of Indivisual

    The sound

Progressive, hook-laden, hard-driving rock with complex, groovy rhythms and powerful, melodic tunes that complement some extremely clever wordcraft. Throaty vocals, floating bass lines, spirited skin bashing and wicked, smooth guitars.

    The Music

    a. The singles: In 1996, Amod recorded 2 singles viz. 'Conjured World' and 'Tattooed Remains' that defined the style of Mystic Frost music.

    b. The first album: 'Ripchord Moksha' has 14 kick ass tracks ranging from progressive heavy rock to dreamy spoken word music. Listen to it online, buy a copy and even post your own personal review of it!

    c. The new album: Mystic Frost have just unleashed their second album 'Indivisual'. It's packed with 15 original tracks, and includes songs such as 'Dragonfly' and 'Human Being' that display a new level of lyrical as well as musical maturity. The progressive nature of composition is retained throughout the album - whether it is the polyrhythm in 'Mr. Nobody', the changing time signatures in 'The first Amphibian' or the syncopation in 'Synesthesia', the musical style of the band has evolved into something that's ultra-progressive, yet superbly melodic and powerful at the same time. Listen to clips, post reviews and buy this album online.

    The Feat

In November 1998, Mystic Frost became the first and the only band in the world to perform on the plateau at the highest altitude in the world. Ladakh, more than 12,000 ft above sea level in the North Indian Himalayas, described as 'the rooftop of the world', is a land of mysticism as well as frost, and it was the perfect place to release the first Mystic Frost album. Despite the fact that it was the middle of winter when daytime temperatures hovered between -5 degrees C and 0 degree C, more than 10,000 people showed up for the concert! When Music Asia, the television channel that covered the show asked Amod why they did such a crazy thing, he said with a wicked smile "we wanted to go where no band has gone before"

    The Band

Amod Dange Amod Dange - vocals and guitars

Uses Fender Stratocaster guitars, Zoom effects, Marshall amps, and a set of thick vocal cords. Inspired by the lyrics of songwriters such as Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen, Amod started writing lyrics much before he knew how to hold a guitar. In his late teens however, the music of bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica and Soundgarden urged him to pick up the guitar and unleash the riffs that were playing havoc in his mind. The brain behind Mystic Frost, Amod now lives in San Francisco.

Sanjeev Pandkar Sanjeev Pandkar - drums

Uses Tama drums with Zildjian cymbals and sticks and no metronome. The most prolific musician in the band, Sanjeev sings, plays guitar, drums, bass and flute with equal ease. He lives in both Mumbai and Pune and is by far the busiest rock musician on the west coast. Between gigs and his job as an A&R man for an Internet-based record company, how he squeezes time to teach music on weekends is a huge mystery.

Anand Kulkarni Anand Kulkarni - bass

Uses a Squire bass and half of the total space on stage. In 1996, Amod called him to ask if he could borrow his bass and joked that he would like it if a player came with it. Anand, who was a singer and guitar player then, not only took bass seriously, but also proved to be an extremely reliable bandmate. During the day, Anand is a translator and currently lives in New Delhi.

Ramnath Ananthram Ramnath Anantharam - lead guitar

Uses a new guitar every second week and is constantly trying out new gear. He once made his own distortion pedal which looked like a large insect with legs protruding from the sides, and called it the "Spider". Ram played all the solos on Ripchord Moksha in one day, without any practice whatsoever. He is also a software engineer and now lives in Singapore.

Derek Julien Derek Julien - lead guitar

Uses Carvin guitars, Zoom and tc-electronic effects, Peavey amps, and an overgrown forefingernail for that unique "pick as you pluck" style of playing. Derek is arguably India's finest guitar player, and its most experienced one without a doubt. Being an excellent sound engineer himself, Derek's galaxy of guitar sounds and his mastery over the instrument immediately put the band at a great advantage when he agreed to play guitar on "Indivisual".

One of my favorite lyrics. Interesting parts that play in an order that makes it hard to guess what's coming next. The song roller-coasters through a variety of rythms and tempos but manages to nail the central idea very well.

If you think you're a nobody, think again. Every one of us IS somebody. This song screams out this very message in raw riffs, varying time signatures and an anthemic ending.

Gutteral vocals and flanged out guitars create imagery of a world in the distant future where bio-robots have conquered death but forgotten the purpose of life itself.
