"Christine Fellows turns in the most wonderfully quiet, chillingly beautiful set I've seen all week." - Georgia Straight
Winnipeg singer/songwriter Christine Fellows was voted "most likely to be a bag lady" by her high school graduating class. Not entirely an inaccurate prediction. No one seemed to know exactly what to make of her back then and that hasn't yet changed. Schooled in jazz piano as a teenager, Christine only began to sing at the age of 23. Going on to front the experimental, emotionally driven Helen, she later picked up the electric guitar in the critically acclaimed folk/pop Special Fancy.
Christine's long-awaited debut solo album, 2 Little Birds, has received rave reviews internationally since its release in January 2000. Her live performances with supporting band The Red Letter Day have been equally well-received, lauded in Winnipeg as "the best live performance by a Winnipeg act" (Winnipeg Free Press) in 1999 and in Vancouver's New Music West 2000. Featuring violist Monica Guenter, cellist Leanne Zacharias and guitarist Stephen Carroll (Weakerthans, Painted Thin), The Red Letter Day's sparse, lush orchestral string arrangements compliment Christine's distinctively dark and melodic vocals and haunting, evocative songs.
Having toured nationally numerous times, Christine has performed at several festivals including the Winnipeg Folk Festival, NXNE and Canadian Music Week. She has been broadcast nationally on both television and radio by the CBC and received the Standard Radio Songwriting Award in 1998, along with many other grants and awards to date. Industry people, as well as audiences, agree that Christine is one of Canada's stunning artists with a rare versatility making her music comfortable in both the biggest of festivals, the most intimate of venues and even the loudest of punk shows.
She is currently writing a musical score for Lesandra Dodson's upcoming choreographic work "You, Your 8 Lives and Me" (2001) and is collaborating with Weakerthan's John K. Samson and Jason Tait in creating a score for poet/publisher Clive Holden for an upcoming spoken word CD.

"Advice uses strings and guitar to cloak a rather more grim set of self-help strictures than "wear sunscreen" ("Don't trip when your legs snap like pencil lead. / Don't spit when your teeth fall like hail."). " |

""Hypothetical" reminds me of Nyman again, the viola cycling over a breathy cello drone, piano eventually joining the viola in its circuit, John K. Samson intoning a poem alternately harrowing ("Say you wake up one morning without a language, / Not lost but taken away") and plaintive ("Make a missing poster for your heart")." |
