Guitar players become adept at plucking melodies on the upper strings, while accompanying the melodies on the lower of the five strings. The length of a melody note, however, is limited by how long the string can continue vibrating. It's usually a matter of seconds before the pitch is lost. A tune like Ultraviolet Café lent itself so well to long, sustained tones with rich vibrato, which only a flute, or other woodwind instrument, could provide. |

Melody and harmony are the two elements classical musicians depend on to show off their artistry. Classical musicians are taught from an early age to depend on nothing else. My training proved wrong during the recording of this song - the warmth of the digital strings and woodwinds was so powerful that I used them extensively in creating a dramatic but warm mood for this piece. The solo flute remains predominant for most of the tune, but the piece does not rely on the single flute line for it's effect. |
