This piece is composed for 23 pianists and was premiered at the Baldwin Factory Outlet store in Cincinnati, OH on Oct. 14th, 2000. Each pianist had his/her own piano and the composer conducted from the middle of the room. The work was originally called "What is Music?" for those participating and listening at the live performance. "Controlled chaos" was the term one parent used in describing the work. |

This is my first children's song. It is influenced by the philosophy of John Cage, the composer of the first "silent" piece entitled 4'33" (4 minutes and 33 seconds). The chorus of my tune goes: "Sounds, sounds all around, music everywhere. There's no such thing as a bad sound. They're all for us to share." Feel free to join in at the end and make sure you play it for young people. |

This work is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, percussion, and piano. The piece was written for the Music2000 festival at CCM in Cincinnati. eighth blackbird, a new music ensemble (chicago), premiered the work in June of 2000. The seven variations are based on seven pitches that occur both melodically and harmonically. This variation, Dance. No. 1 begins the work and in a live context the movements are connected. I've separated them here so that they are easier to download. Hope you enjoy. |
