Aries the Ram is the first movement of an orchestral suite entitled "Fire Signs," based on sun signs of the western astrological zodiac. In this suite, Aries the Ram is followed by Leo the Lion and Sagittarius the Archer. Each movement explores the archetype of each sign. "Fire Signs" is the first of a projected four orchestral suites that will eventually encompass the entire twelve signs of the zodiac. This mp3 file is an excerpt which includes the second half of Aries the Ram.

Cuerpo de Mujer is the first of the three Neruda songs. The Neruda songs are an important work in that they represent a turning point for me. In these songs I found a lyric voice that is unique to myself, despite their obvious pan-Hispanic idiom. They are the result of my turning away from academic notions about new music, and have remained among my most popular and best-regarded work.

The text of En Mi Cielo al Crepusculo, the third of the Neruda songs, is a poetic paraphrase of a poem from Rabindranath Tagore's "The Gardener."

The Seven Nocturnal Heptastichs were composed on poetry by Odysseus Elytis, the Nobel Prize-winning Greek poet. An heptastich is a seven-line poetic form. This collection of seven poems evoke nocturnal images and feelings. The harp was chosen as the accompaniment for its association with the classical Greek lyre, and the semi-improvisatory nature of these songs recalls the performance practices of ancient epic poets.

The third of the Three Gospel Songs, Up on the Mountain was found in a turn-of-the-century book on gospel music. I had to change the harmonic structure and write a third verse of lyrics in order for the song to work, but as a result I think Up on the Mountain is a real treasure, finally living up to its musical potential.

Christopher Robin is the last of the five movements that make up "The Tao of Pooh" for piano trio. It is joyful romp through Hundred Acre Wood, that gets lost along the way (perhaps near Eeyore's Gloomy Place) before making its way back home.
