Cuerpo de Mujer is the first of the three Neruda songs. The Neruda songs are an important work in that they represent a turning point for me. In these songs I found a lyric voice that is unique to myself, despite their obvious pan-Hispanic idiom. They are the result of my turning away from academic notions about new music, and have remained among my most popular and best-regarded work. | MP3.com CD: Songings - buy it!

Lyrics
Body of woman, white hills, white thighs,
so you seem to the world in your attitude of surrender.
My rough savage body plows in you
and a child leaps from the depths of the earth.
I was alone like a tunnel. From me the birds fled,
and the night enveloped me with its powerful invasion.
To survive I forged you like a weapon,
like an arrow in my bow, like a stone in my sling.
But the hour of vengeance falls, and I love you.
Body of skin, of moss, of milk, avid and firm.
Ah the chalices of the breast! Ah the eyes of absence!
Ah the roses of the pubis! Ah your voice, slow and sad!
Body of my woman, I will persist in your grace.
My thirst, my endless desire, my shifting path!
Dark rivers where the eternal thirst flows,
and the weariness flows, and the infinite longing.
