Tracey K. Houston made her stage debut at age nine while living in Quesnel, BC, but since the age of three she was singing
along to classic country and western tunes at family gatherings of "homemade music". It was during her
Junior High School years in Drayton Valley, Alberta that she realized that she'd like to pursue a career in country music somehow, whether it
be "behind the scenes" or as a singer. The big problem with being a singer though... she was very shy and hated being the center of attention
on anything, so she decided she wanted to be a backup singer. That way she could still be on stage, but not be in the spotlight! :-)
Her big influences were Loretta Lynn & Jean Shepard. She was in the school band in Jr and Sr High School, first playing the Clarinet then the Tenor
Sax. While in High School she also took singing class but her music teacher told her "you'll never get anywhere singing like that." He didn't like her
"country sound". However there was one song with a very high note she was having difficulty reaching. Later that week she happened to be singing along to an old
Waylon Jennings/Anita Carter duet where Anita goes really high, and Tracey K had no problem following right along with her. She tried the same technique
she used with her voice with Anita as on her song she was working on for school, and voila! She did it! The teacher was so pleased with her improvement and asked
how she managed to reach the note. Her reply, "I had the best teachers." He got all pleased thinking she was referring to him, but she clarified that real quick when
she added, "The country singers I listen to!" :-) After completing High School in Calgary, Alberta, it took many years of singing locally before the extreme stage fright and shyness
started to dissipate. It was in 1991 that she recorded a 4-song mini-album for "gig product". It was in 1993 that the label head, Scoot Irwin, of ATI Records out of Toronto, Ontario approached
her about releasing a single on his label. She recorded and released "He's Not For Real" released in Canada, the USA and Europe . It did well in Canada and especially well in Europe. That was what
kickstarted her! :-)
From there she went on to sign for a one-year stint with Rosebud Records in 1997 out of Nashville.
She released her first single "Falling For You" off that album and it went to #1 on the Independent
Charts in the USA in December 1997. Subsequent single releases were "I'm Tired of
Being Something (that means nothing to you)", "Is There Love After You?", and "I'll Take You Back".
All received moderate airplay. In 1999 she went back to work on her 2nd album, "I'm Not The Same
Girl" which is on her own label, Songbird Productions, out of Canada. After releasing it in 2000 many singles
have been released off it, all of them doing very well especially on the European charts, including
"You're Walkin' & Talkin' In My Sleep Again" (#3 in Sweden); "Count Me Out"; "I'm Not The Same Girl";
"The Girl In Oklahoma" (stayed on the European charts for FIVE months!), "Lonesome" (written by fellow Canadian Ray Griff), "Deja Blue" and "Hot Steamy Night In Dixie."
She's reviewing material for her latest projects. One will be in the same style as her current album, plus one will be an
album containing trucking (and some train) songs.... since she used to be an "over-the-road" solo truck driver.
So far she's recorded a couple new songs to be put on a new album, one of them is below... "You Did Everything Right."
