Trad. arr: 'Bill' was the true life Morris Slater, a so-called black desperado, but, a 'Robin Hood' to the poor people black and white. He traveled the L&N Railroad in Alabama and West Florida, robbing trains by throwing food and other goods off the box cars, untill his death on March 7, 1897. Constable J.S. McGowan shot Slater through a store window in Atmore, Ala. The store keeper, hoping to collect reward money, pulled his shot gun from behind the counter and shot him also.
