One of my more accessible pieces as well as one of my most time consuming. (I logged in 97 studio hours on the sequence alone.) As an experiment, I am very satisfied with the guitar solo which was recorded backwards and had a delay added during the mix. The ability to easily record reversed tracks is at least one advantage of working with an analog machine. Text note: We all need order in our lives, but not too much. |

In the mid 1990’s my co-producer, Phil Calvert, and I began a series of concert and club performances. There were no electronics at all–which for me was a novel experience. I spoke or sang, and Phil played guitar. Most of the selections which Phil and I wrote together grew out of these performances. When it came time to record these pieces I decided to bring in sequenced material along with the guitars and whatever else might be lying around the studio. I spent a great deal of time listening to Phil’s performances and then tried to match his pacing and feel within each sequence. For "Unrequited", I was very pleased with the sequencing andconsidered it finished, but Phil objected to the voice track and wanted to reprocess it. Before long he had added a guitar track as well. It’s now hard to imagine it otherwise. I have no idea where the idea for the story came from, but it has become a favorite of mine. |

As much as anything, the structure of "Toledo" is dependent upon its many subtle–and not so subtle–changes in tempo. It rarely remains at any one speed for more than a few measures. Technically challenging was the recording of the voices. Nothing very cutting edge–just your classic bouncing of tracks combined with analog pitch modifications. Only slightly autobiographical. |
