    Artist description
Based in Wichita and Manhattan, Trip Sofa has been influenced greatly by the Kansas City/Lawrence sound, including such innovative bands as Hot Pink Turtle, Dig Hay Zoose, Dev Null, and Ethereal Soul. In addition, the band claims influences as varied as Muddy Waters, Primus, and Pantera. Since Trip Sofa was formed from members of two metal bands, sometimes that metal stereotype was hard to overcome. However, there is no mistake now that Trip Sofa has simply taken that heavy metal, combined it with jazz, and thrown it into a blender with a heaping spoonful of funk. Kind of a Metallica meets Jane's Addiction meets Primus...Or something like that.

    Press Reviews
PitchWeekly, October 12-October 18, 1995. Demo Memos. SMUDGE. There's songwriters, who often come across as uninspiring, and then there are rockers, who all too often rely solely on energy to carry a listener. While very few artists are able to combine the two successfully, Smudge appears to be on the right path to making music that is both intelligent and powerful. The Manhattan, KS foursome employs an explosive dual guitar attack that can be subtle and serene one moment and an ear canal shredding machine the next. Hollis Berry's urgently schizophrenic style never grows tiring as it sputters and sprawls its way across this promising seven-song demo. Standouts include the neurotic "Whole," the loungey "Aliens," and "French Toast," which fuses together psychedelic Indian melodies and a pseudo-metal bridge. One can't help but think this demo is only the tip of the iceberg for this up and coming band.
