Artist description
Keyboardist and effect-vocalist Sidney Howard's SATYRICAL ELECTRONIFUNKIQUE FUSION OF THEATER-OF-THE MIND, TECHNO, LITERATURE, AND R&B heavily armed with a prickly off-sense of all being put on. Carbonated Milk is a concept ensemble that varies in structure as the idiom calls. |

Artist History
Carbonated Milk was started as a concept ensemble in 1979...when founding member Sidney Howard was completing his undergraduate degree in Jazz and Commercial Music. In 1980 Sid moved to Detroit, MI to become part of George Clinton's Thang, Inc. Though the roots of CM have all ways been jazz, the humor free flow of P-Funk has always shaped its style. CM's first album was "Please Don't Harmonica" (June 1992)--based on Sidney Howard's short story of the same name. It was a slight parody of Chick Corea's Return to Forever. It included performances by several of Sid's "P-Funk Lab" rats."The Men in Martian Ice" is CM's Anthology album, containing 22 selections that span from 1979 to 1999.
Currently, SIDizz a contributing member of the literary ensemble "Enteje" [(NTJ) short for None Text Journalists. They are currently at work on a Funk-u-meant-hairy which has garnered interest from National Public Radio concerns. Also, SIDney has just finished two Contemporary Gospel Music CD projects for an Acid Jazz artist named Siloam Pool [www.SiloamPool.com] and a most be heard to be believed vocal wonder named Rodney Hoskins [www.rodneyhoskins.com].
The former ["Colors of Black and White"] is a work somewhat new to the US Christian Music market. With the influence and instrumental backing of Sidz CarbonatedMilk, it's perhaps more Jazz than Acid. It features the beautiful voice and intense poetic lyrics of Siloam...along with two of SIDz originals. The last song on the CD is "Pote" from Carbonated Milk's highly acclaimed 1992 Electronic Jazz Fusion CD "Please Don't Harm Monica" [soon to be added to this site]
SIDz production of "Tell Them" by Rodney Hoskins is an eleven song work which features strong smooth silky vocals from a man whose voice has been compared most often to the likes of Luther Vandross, Jeffrey Osbourne, Will Downing, and even described as a male counter to Areatha Franklin. Again, SIDz CarbonatedMilk of human kidness provides a warm an inspiring orchestral musical backdrop which is quite a departure from the "usual milk" |

Review by Mike Rimmer
"Nine out of ten stars! EXCELLENT"
"Tired of the same old same old? Looking for something original? Something Different? Something dangerous? Here it is! Check out this electronic album from keyboardist Sidney Howard and Funk fan Jack Marchbanks because these guys cook up music that genuinely takes you on a journey and blows your mind. Based in Detroit and with mainstream musical credentials, the album is actually a bit of a journey, taking in musicwritten by the guys (actually SID) over the past twenty years. It is also a spiritual odyssey examining different aspects of the human condition. Sorry but you'll have to engage the brain whilst turning up your amp. Got to confess that after a few listens, I am only just beginning to understand some of the pieces though musically this is incredibly satisfying. If you love the diversity and creativity of 'Secret Archives of the Vatican', you must check this out. Favourites include 'Ophdisbigblughmuhsheen' with its funky undertones and segments of sitar. 'I Love Polyester' at first glance appears to be some nonsense along the lines of the Barnes and Barnes classic 'Fishheads', but don't be deceived as there's a deeper mesage lurking underneath! And that's the whole fascination with this because Carbonated Milk are intelligent musicians - check out the Jazz influences and avante garde musical approach but also check out their desire to communicate a Christian message in an intriguing manner. Their use of samples is brilliant. Other highlights are the electronic funk of 'Duophonix', the intense sinister atmospheres and treated vocals of 'Dearborn', the sheer groviness of 'Malabala', and the totally satiriacl 'Black Velvet Elvis'. Out on their own, it's weird, it's wonderful and Christendom desperately needs more bands with the originality and creative vision of Carbonated Milk."
In Metro Detroit, "The Men in Martian Ice may be purchased at DEARBORN MUSIC (313)561-1000 22000, Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI 48124 and at FLIPSIDE RECORDS(248)585-4090 41 East 14 Mile, Clawson, MI 48017 (just east of Livernois).
