    Artist description
The International Airforce call themselves a good band because they consider nobody on earth as an enemy, the only ones they know for that could be extraterrestrial and only in case they donīt carry long big cigarettes with them to make up a friendly conversation. The largest german island, Ruegen, is the place where their roots can be found for all eternity, but in fact their home is music. People may think what comes out of this edge of so called civilisation can only be brutal-death-metal or punk or some soft-dumb dancefloor-music, anyway, the IAF have been melting up their minds to create their own particular style which could be described best as an alloying of groovin'seventies soul surf grunge music, because you really cannot put their music in any kind of a draw. The band was founded in May ī98 as a session-projekt of 7 musicians, some of them had played in different groups before. When this motley crowd gave their first and last concert at the Old Ferryport Building of Sassnitz in midsummer some of them knew that this was just the beginning of something new, something more serious in their musical life. Half of them went off to enjoy somewhere else when Robert and Henning, the two guitarists of the new IAF met again those days they decided to play from now in one band like they did before with Stone Flower. Old Airforce keyboard-player Axel stayed with his vital stratospheric carpet of sound and so did Gerd, the bassman. Recruiting Erik (from Stralsund) who had been drumming (mostly) in the cellar for quite a while until he joined them in September they became a complete band again. After a few gigs in fall/winter 98/99 when they kept on playing songs and coversongs from the summer and new ones as well they put the best of them on a CD in home recording.Songs like the laid back "look at me" and the lilting "sunset" are only two aspects of one story, both of them written by leadguitarist Robert Oeser, can give an impression of that time. It is not a lack of respect when he is performing a distinctive fusion of surfmusic, grunge and hardrock elements just to bring out an ironic view at himself. Meeting Henningīs Neil-Young-coloured guitar-rhythm the music becomes a passionate groove which is hard to ignore. In summer ī99 they quite often played live round the island. They gained a lot of enthusiasm from people especially when they played open-air. Although conditions have turned badly sometimes they always made the best out of it even if the band couldnīt finish a gig because of burning amplifiers. Black clouds started coming up already in June when Axel offered that he is about to leave after the summer. There was also no common ground anymore between Robert and bassist Gerd, so they split up after their last concert given in this (combination). It wouldnīt be the International Airforce if that would have been the end of their way. At the moment the band is working on their first album they try to fix up within the next 4 months to go on tour with new songs in late summer of this year.
