    Artist description
Vivek Maddala is a national award-winning composer and multi-instrumental performer, producer, and engineer. His music blends diverse influences, from 19th-Century Romanticism to big-band jazz, from rock to Afro-Cuban, resulting in an emotive frenzy of percussion, brass, guitars, woodwinds, and strings. =========================================================================== Vivek won the first Grand Prize in the national Young Film Composers Competition in 2000, he was a Sundance Fellowship finalist in 2001, and he was invited to study in the prestigious ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop in 2002. In July of 2002, Vivek was one of five composers featured in TCM's Tribute to Great American Composers. Vivek's film scoring background has been diverse: he composed, orchestrated, and recorded the acclaimed 74-minute score for the classic silent film, The Ace of Hearts, which world-premiered in October of 2000. In late 2001, he composed, orchestrated, and conducted the score for the film, The Flag, which world premiered in February of 2002. In 2002, Vivek composed, orchestrated, and recorded a 90-minute modern symphonic score for the silent thriller, The Mysterious Lady, starring Greta Garbo (which world premiered in June 2002). Also in 2002, he composed, performed, and recorded a contemporary Indian-influenced rock score for the independent film, Equation, which is currently touring the film festival circuit. Most recently, Vivek composed and recorded a modern jazz-infused score for the romantic film, Martha's Bakery. Vivek is currently composing two new scores: an 80-minute orchestral score for the Marion Davies comedy, The Patsy, and songs/score for the Indian Bollywood film, Aapki Priya. =========================================================================== Formerly a pop/rock solo artist, Vivek has gradually shifted his musical focus to one steeped more in symphonic textures and '50s jazz, pitched to a darker, romantic world-view divorced from youth culture and self-congratulatory rock personae. When scoring music for film, Vivek goes beyond the primary functions of movie music--i.e., of supplementing and strengthening the visual and emotional components. He speaks with his own personal style, his own musical voice. He supplies a product that is not just background music, but that is recognizably his. In a sense, his music characterizes and frames the pictures. Tom Karsch of Turner Entertainment wrote, "...Vivek's artistic vision is striking, cinematic, and beautiful."
