Artist History
The recordings on this page epitimize the term "bootleg." They are NOT professionally recorded ... or encoded for that matter. The tracks from Jimstock II were recorded with three mikes on a four-track cassette recorder, then converted to cd. The available version of 'Don't Do Me Any Favors' wasn't as quite as lucky. It was recorded on a single mike, about one-huindred and twenty feet from the stage. That wasn't so bad ... it actually picked up the music clearer than most bootlegs. The bad part was the original tape is missing, and what appears here is a copy of that original tape, replete with tape hiss and warbling. _____________________________________ Those who were there that Friday night, July 17, 1998, understood the importance of Jimstock II, and witnessed one of the greatest nights in indie music in New York City in decades. In addition to the Devil's Advocates, taking the stage that night at the Orang Bear were NYC heavywights Moxie and Room on Fire. NYC punk poet Tony Rubin did a great set, Luciár made an appearance, and Heidi Petrikat in one of her first solo shows, was a late and great scratch for Jen Zablocki (of Kittyhawk fame). The Devil's Advocates set -- availaible here -- feaures the only known recorded versions of "Rocket City" and "So White." The former is a solid rock song with great -- and I mean great -- twangy-surfy guitar. Fantastic melody, something you'd whistle to subconsciously ... consciously even. Pretty good recording quality (for what it is). "So White" was a little more raucous, especially considering it was the closing number. The recorded version at times sounds like M.X. was shouting through a bullhorn held up to your ear, and at other times, quite grooving. Not terrifically unlike anearly live Clash show. At one point, DA's bassist Pedro Gingerich sounds like he's the one in your ear, while everyone else is at the fifty yard line. It's absolutely hysterical. But alas, it is the only recorded version of a truly great song. Just check out the lyrics. _____________________________________ 'Don't Do Me Any Favors' was recorded on Huntington, Long Island at New York Avenue, sometime on the Wrong Kind of Asshole for America tour in 1997. _____________________________________ |
