Speaking of well done, Spirit Web just flat out rules. Background: The first time I heard the Spirit Web CD (on CDr, don't worry, it was authorized) was on the day the new Maiden was released. End of day tally: Iron Maiden BNW- 1 spin, Spirit Web S/T- 3 spins. Even cooler, Spirit Web's first spin was directly after the first BNW spin. After SW was done, the replay button was smacked. What you have in the Spirit Web CD is power metal, but with a lot of nuances of other metal genres within. Parts have a progmetal touch, others will have you thinking speed/thrash. I've racked up about a dozen listems since the official disc hit my mailbox and it still sounds fresh. The highlight of this disc for me is the vocals. If you combined the best of the likes of Dickinson, Tate and Alder you have a point of reference as to where the vocals are coming from. The best thing is that there is no cloning going on here. While Scott Huffman could easily cover anything by the aforementioned vocalists, he has a style that is completely his own. Also of note is just intense guitar insanity going on all over the place. The excellence continues with a bottom end that is tight and clear. Great placement- up front where appropriate. Some have commented that the production is average. The know-how is definitely there. I'm sure there were ample budget restraints. If these guys were thrown a little budget money by a label looking to sign a sure winner and maybe sent down to Morrisound, sweet lordy day. It might just do a few of you in. My final verdict: This CD will easily occupy space in my top 10 for 2000, and I've got a very strong feeling that they'll be nesting in the top 5. So go buy it!Slauter Xstroyes and Winterkill bassist Brent Sullivan ?!?!Winterkill drummer Tony Rios ?!?! Paul Speredes (guitar) andScott Huffman (vocals) from Syris ?!?! What the F**k ?!?!What kind of an all-star line-up do we have here!! The truthis when you want "underground US METAL", the best seems to comeout of Chicago. Most Spirit Web members have been in metalbands going on 20 years now - and they are THE BEST!! This newrelease combines the raw intensity of Winterkill's - Feast For ABeggar with the more polished Savatage'y style of Syris. It'svery evident the band concentrated on songwriting - you can't pigeonhole this release in any specific genre, each song is unique anddifferent . . . though you'll hear Power, Speed, Melodic and Progressive influences, you WON'T hear any trendy grunge/groove/industrial bullshit!! This is true 80's style metal with a 90's production and flavor. Hallelujah for US METAL!! Before I forget - "Hey IronMaiden, if you ever need someone to fill in for Bruce - ScottHuffman is your man" . . .YEAH BABY, I GOT YOUR MOJO - RIGHT HERE!!Sir Lord Doom REVIEW #2 Jesus Christ - this fucking rules. It's IS different than Syris - but I can't quite figure out how. I know that sounds stupid. Oh well. The Syris sound is really more that of older-school classic power/thrash IMO. SW is much more refined. The leads really stand out on SW too. But the trashyness is still there. Spirit Webis also a bit more speedy to me. And the production is a bit "cleaner-sounding" on SW.It's a full disc. Full of excellent everything. It's a no-brainer purchase for Syris fans. But I also highly recommend it to everyone. It slays in a major way. REVIEW #3 Regarding Spirit Web, well, it greatly deserves a megaton of hype. It is without a doubt one of the buy or die discs of the year. I was lucky enough to hear this CD a month or so ago, and I was absolutely amazed. Once I get my hands on a copy, it's going into heavy rotation.Oh yeah. The artwork is killer. REVIEW#4 This is kick ass American PowerMetal ladies and gents. Scott from Syris is singing on this bad boy, but has a more of an old Tate feel to his vocals on this than he does on the Syris material.Production could be beefier, but that's minor. All the songs are solid, the vocals soar, tasty power riffage abounds, melodic too. The rhythm crew kicks ass too... Tony Rios the drummer sounds like he's having fun (strange to say maybe, but I get the feeling when listening to this that Tony had a blast). I do say, I like it Mikey. I'm not sure if it's up to Senti's standards of power metal, but it does have a catchiness that I think he'd like. Not ground making in the least, but it's not supposed to be.If you like kick ass, straight at you, fun power metal, jump on this.Paul, Scott, Tony, Brent... kick ass gentleman.Darping... cool artwork too... thanks again.'Zillanp: Spirit Web track 10... 'Undivine Intervention'... this may be my favorite song... REVIEW #5 It has the speed and near-thrashiness of Helstar with those Rivera-like vocals. They have the power, riffing, and chugging of the old classic Fates Warning material. Another trait shared with the older Fates is that ever-so-brief pause in the transitions before shifting gears. The comparison to Priest I think results from the songwriting and production approach. Spirit Web uses a whole fuck it type of technique that results in a very "what we play is what you hear" sound. No frills. No tricks. No cheese whatsoever. Minimal overdubbing for lead/rhythm guitars and background vocals. The phrasing of the low to mid-ranged vocals also remind me of the vocals of older Halford - dramatic without sounding corny (listen to track 3 for this). The rhythm section is incredibly tight and the drummer adds flourishes and embellishments constantly.Bone-crushing power metal recommended to all fans of the genre especially the older-school, traditional power metal guys. REVIEW #6Well, honestly the Spirit Web CD is fucking great. When I received it at first,I expected it to be very modern etc. but I was fucking wrong. The riffsare simply fantastic and the rhythm section kicks-ass! As for Scott's singing, you already know how much I admire him. The last days I've been listening tothe CD very often. Congratulations guys! Once again you did a fabulous job
