Artist History
Y was formed in 1995 by front man Lip. Peter, David, and Mike had been playing together in a cover band in the Bathurst area for nearly two years when Y came to be. Lip also had experience performing with a series of bands in Nova Scotia. The four shared the influences of bands such as Pearl Jam, The Tragically Hip, Counting Crows, The Barenaked Ladies, and The Watchmen. |

Press Reviews
YDRIPIndependentRecorded:First things first, please change your name, the letter Y looks naked and alone. Secondly, congratulations to Derrick Budden for his cover photo.Drip is a fitting title for this record. The sound of the album evokes the imagery of sitting in a warm bath, letting the water slowly run down the drain. The best thing about this release is that the guys are definitely a band in the classic sense of the word. There is a collective vision here, exemplified by the fact that even though the songs were recorded almost seven months apart, in different studios, with different producer, the album remains a cohesive whole.Singer Lippin could be com-pared to Eddie Vedder, which I don't mean as a criticism. Lippin (yes only one name) sings with a hearty baritone/tenor that is edgy and emotional. He sings like a man who means what he says. Musicianship is first class. Dave Goyette (drums), Mike Goyette (bass), Pete Colton (guitars) and Lippin himself (acoustic guitar) play very well together - this is the essence of being a band. The Goyettes are an extremely tight rhythm section. These boys really grove and know how to effectively deal with rhythmic space and time. They provide a really interesting musical foundation without being too busy. Colton performs some really tasty guitar work here. His crunchy tone lays down super strong guitar solos that really elevate the songs, he plays solos that actually leave you wanting more. This guy understands tensions, dynamics and restraint, a wisdom sorely lacking by so many rock players.Lippin's warm vocals show a depth that invites you to listen close. The vocals are treated like an instrument on this recording. The way they blend with the instruments makes you want to listen repeatedly to catch every word and nuance.Everything has its place in these mixes. The drum and bass sounds are incredibly thick and punchy. You can feel the solid crack of every snare hit and the air move with every bass note.Special attention should be paid to She - the gravely vocals over a laid back shuffle on a love song to a Ski-Doo!! How Cool! |
