    Artist History
Bandleader/alto saxophonist/composer Travis Sullivan met guitarist Rez Abbasi while sitting in at a gig with bassist and fellow classmate at Manhattan School of Music - Catherine Popper. The musical connection between Catherine,Rez, and Travis was evident immediately. Shortly thereafter, Travis hired Ari for a gig with Rez and Catherine on a friend's recommendation, and the music that was created that night was incredible. Early in 1999, Travis decided to take this band into the studio to record a number of his original compositions. The musical results of this recording date were fresh and spontaneous and resulted in Travis Sullivan's debut CD, As We Speak.

    Press Reviews
"Travis Sullivan is a gifted alto saxophonist and improviser who has also developed a strong and commanding voice as a composer. Sullivan has a sumptuous tone that can be darkly alluring (as on the somber "No Consequence"), pungent and probing (as on the title track) or robust and swaggering (as on the urgent "Ding Dong").The ensemble, Project One, demonstrates a special chemistry here, swinging in kinetic though understated fashion on uptempo numbers while creating evocative soundscapes on more open-ended pieces. Credit drummer Ari Hoenig's loose touch and highly interactive approach to the kit with allowing much of Sullivan's material to really take flight. The saxophonist also seems to have forged a special connection with guitarist Rez Abbasi, whose warm-toned legato flow beautifully complements Sullivan's own surging style. The two are particularly in synch on the bristling Ornette-meets-Metheny vehicle, "The Spazz." Sullivan demonstrates an angular kind of ingenuity on the melancholy "Theme For Shannon" and plays with great heart on the ballad "Lost For Words." Probing, provocative and ultimately compelling, As We Speak is a persuasive showcase for a promising new talent on the scene".-Bill MilkowskiJazz Times
