    Artist description
PAWN is an experimental soundtrack band. Most of our music was improvised. We wanted to make people feel an environment or situation from the music we made. We wanted have the music speak the words as in books and move the pictures as in film. Pawn was very serious about the topics we explored such as racism, democracy, and greed. At the same time we have a silly and twisted sense of humor that runs through our music, lyrics, improvisations and band members. The music is varied and is best listen to very loudly or on headphones due to the range in dynamics and tonality.

    Artist History
PAWN was started as a result of trying to reform MLS, a hardcore band from SF. Andre, Alex and Jeff realized that the structure of the MLS's music didn't give the freedom and diversity that our practices were seeking. As the practices contiued PAWN evolved into an improvisational structure. Only one of the songs from the MLS made it to the PAWN set. Most of the songs were improvised and the rest were written out but had large areas of open interpitation. PAWN played in a variety of clubs in San Francisco and produced one demo which only featured 4 of the 10 plus songs and improvisations done at the recording session at Greenhouse Studios. As PAWN progressed, the addition of other musicians became a regular event at live performances. The added trumpet, sax, bagpipe, percussionist, or harmonica added new dimentions of sound and texture which allowed PAWN to better communicate thier twisted musical novel-movie-tv show-pop rock ballads. The final PAWN show was at the Edinburgh Castle in San Francisco. The show's highlights were guest bagpipe player,Chase and an improvisation played to an S/M act.
