Artist History The Mean Reds began in '94, recorded their first CD, Pretty in Pieces, in '95, gigged gratuitously in '96 and '97, broke up in '98, and reformed in '99 to make several recordings, four of which are available here. So Flip out, Daddy-O, the Mean Reds are back!

Press Reviews Flip out Daddy-O, the Mean Reds are here! Pretty in Pieces is eight songs of unimpeachable new wave. The band plays singer Gareth Eaves's songs with verve and energy, and the lyrics are self-deprecating and punk. "Been there, done that" cops a few bars of "My Sharona" before turning Joe Jackson, "Teenage Hearts" was built for cruising, and "Corduroy Boy" is mostly silly. In the midst of all this, the sensitive-guy walk in the park of "Day we met" could easily have come off as an unnecessary concession, but the chorus veers from the maudlin to the alcoholic just in time. A tongue-in-cheek ode to Vancouver ends the CD with a bang. The Mean Reds deserve a big fat recording contract just for being the Mean Reds.Shawn Connor, the Georgia Straight
