Artist description
Her music has been compared to a wide range of other artists, including Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan, The Cowboy Junkies and Natalie Merchant, and yet has a unique sound that defies all of those comparisons. Joyelle's classical voice training is evident in her vocal control and range, while her jazz influence is displayed in her improvisational vocal stylings. She places herself in the category of folk/pop, but writes music across many genre boundaries. Her combination of soaring melodies and evocative, intense, personal lyrics create a spell-binding sound experience. Joyelle's lyrics cover a wide range of topics, from environmentalism to women's body image, from the follies of high school sex to the key to happiness. "Music is my method of communicating the things that I am concerned about to the world. Many of my songs were written to make people think about their actions or perceptions." Joyelle has performed at many venues around Vancouver, including the Purple Onion Cabaret, The Starfish Room, the Cellar Jazz Cafe, and the Living Closet. In March she performed live on the Vancouver Television Breakfast Show. She is currently in the studio recording her debut CD, one. The album is scheduled to be released late summer 2000. |
